Vern Stephens Makes It Into The Red Sox Hall of Fame

14th February 2006

Vern Stephens

Not everything I’m into involves the business of baseball *(gasp)*. Believe it or not, I actually love the game.

As a confession, I have gravitated to the Red Sox as a point of interest, both from a business aspect, and a team aspect.

Yesterday was a great day for me. A few months ago, former Dodger GM and VP Fred Claire contacted me about Vern Stephens. Fred, a longtime fan of Stephens, was looking for info on him to try and see about getting him inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame. Given my interviews with Bobby Doerr and Johnny Pesky, I had become highly interested in Stephens, as well.

What began as a research project turned into a cause. I contacted NWSABR member, co-author of Paths to Glory, and longtime Red Sox fan and researcher Mark Armour to assist Fred and I.

Yesterday the Red Sox HOF class of 2006 was announced with Stephens being inducted. As the press release announced:

Six uniformed personnel and one front office executive have been selected for induction into the Red Sox Hall of Fame. The 2006 induction dinner will be held November 9 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center with net proceeds benefiting the Red Sox Foundation and its charitable programs.

The Red Sox Hall of Fame Class of 2006 includes infielder Vern Stephens (1948-52), righthander Ellis Kinder (1948-55), second baseman Jerry Remy (1978-84), first baseman George Scott (1966-71, 1977-79) and managers Joe Morgan (1988-91) and Dick Williams (1967-69).

The non-uniformed selection is Red Sox Vice President Dick Bresciani (1972- ).

So, here’s to you Vern and your surviving family. Glad to see Fred contacted me.
