Angels Name Cases Comes Down On the Side of The Angels

10th February 2006

Angels Win Name Game Case

Unless something changes relatively soon, The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is the name that is sticking. As of yesterday, there was no word on whether an appeal by the City of Anaheim would be forthcoming. Given the fact that the City met more than once on whether to move forward on the case due to the costs involved, it seems unlikely.

As the LA Times reports:

Ending a yearlong dispute that sparked regional one-upmanship and talk-show ridicule, an Orange County jury Thursday decided that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim could keep their geographically awkward name.

After deliberating just over four hours in a trial that pitted the city of Anaheim against its hometown team, jurors voted 9 to 3 that the Angels did not violate five words in the stadium lease that required that the team “include the name Anaheim therein.”

To break down the monetary side of this, Anaheim was looking for damages up to $373 million. How much did the jury award? Zero. What Anaheim walked out of the court with was a tab for $10 million to cover the Angels’ legal expenses, on top of what they have already spent.

When the opinion is available in PDF, I will be publishing it on Business of Baseball.com
