27.4% of all MLB Players are Born Outside of US for 2006

MLB continues as an International game as 27.4% of all players being born outside the US(223 of the 813 players — 747 active, 25-man roster players and 66 players on disabled lists) as determined in a survey by MLB based on Opening Day rosters of the 30 Major League Baseball Clubs.
This is a decline from last year’s record setting 29.2% (242 out of 829 players).
The Dominican Republic, with 85 players, produced the most Major Leaguers born outside the U.S., while Venezuela had the next highest total with 43 players and Puerto Rico follows with 33.
Among the Major League Clubs, the New York Mets have the most foreign-born players with 15, followed by the Los Angeles Dodgers (14) and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (13). Players on the Dodgers’ roster represented a Major League-high eight areas outside the United States (Canada, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Korea, Panama, Puerto Rico, Taiwan and Venezuela).
Additionally, 2,964 of the 6,568 minor league players under contract in 2006 — 45.1 percent — were born outside the United States, compared to 45.4 percent in 2005. Minor leaguers hailed from 33 different countries and territories. The pool of minor league players is comprised of those players who are not on Major League 25-man rosters or disabled lists.
