Look the only way to fix this issue is to have a level playing field for all the teams. I understand that the ratings increased over last year for the world series, because the yankees were in it. But the only way to fix the attendance issue over the long term is not to turn our heads while players hit a lot of home runs (late 1990's and early 2000's), it's not to allow the yankees to spend more and field a team of all-stars (paying more for two players than some teams pay for their whole payroll), it's not taking a wrecking ball to the whole operation.
But the main key is to get other people involved.
1) don't have play games at 8pm EST that go until past midnight, how can the younger generation (13 and young) get into watching baseball, when the go to bed in 10pm (which with all the commercials is like the 3rd or 4th inning)
2) force the smaller cap teams to spend a minimal amount on their team
3) set a maximum a player can earn (look I understand their are more yankee fans than fans for any other team, but the more we allow the yankees to win championships {40 WS appearances in 105 opportunities - that's down right wrong and will drive fans away, except yankee fans} I know no one wants to make the decision that will make things more difficult for the yankees, but it has to be done in order to bring back fans to other teams. Come on why would we play if we were all yankee fans?
4) get different teams prime time tv spots. I know yankee/red sox gets the best tv ratings, well tell tv to put their marketing mojo behind some other rivalries. They can do it and this will grow the fan base for these other teams. (don't try to make up rivalries either, fans see right through that stuff)
It is becoming increasingly difficult to be a fan. I've been a fan of the Orioles since I was born, but with ridiculous spending that goes on in the east, we don't have a shot. Is that Peter Angolos' (sic) fault? I don't know. I do know that once July comes around I don't watch baseball. I know that there are more fans out there like me too. (look at Baltimore's buy one ticket, get one free promotion to try to fill the stands) This is an all to common occurrence and needs to change if baseball is going to get back on their feet.

The sad thing is there are some great baseball cities out there, but unless the city is named boston or new york, baseball officials and tv people don't care. It's sad, very sad.
